Is Knitting Hereditary?

Is knitting and crocheting hereditary? Well my grandmother knitted and made thousands of slippers, and also many, many granny squares, which eventually became blankets (I have one, it's classic). I learned the yarn and needle habit from her, by watching her slip the stitches over and over, for hours. She spent all her days either in the kitchen cooking, or knitting slippers.

Forty some years later, that's all I want to do...knit and cook. Work consumes my day, and at the end it's really back to the needle and yarn for me. I can switch back and forth from crocheting to knitting, never bored by either one.

My mother was an extraordinarily crafty person. She could literally make anything out of thread, yarn, needles, rug hooks, crochet hooks, and follow any pattern and complete almost all projects (eventually). Her stash was overflowing, and she was happy to have all the yarn a person could possible store. (SABLE - Stash Accumulated Beyond Life Expectancy). When she passed away 4 years ago, I inherited it all. I have patterns from the 40's, 50's - 90's, a whole lifetime of possiblities and accomplishments. I can't part with these boxes.

A happy moment is watching my daughters knit...they started when they were both young, and never once complained about it. My most cherished moments is when all of us, grandmothers, aunts, mothers, and daughters could all sit around the house and move the yarn around the needles, and have moments of laughter, moments of quiet times, and seconds of appreciation for this lost art....

Michelle just designed a scarf herself, and is starting a new trend in SB...I just finished my socks!! Now I think I need to make a pair for Sara (damn blog, she keeps bringing up the comment about love = socks)Sara needs to finish her scarf for Lu before next Wednesday or a friendship may be shattered....and our tradition goes on, and hopefully passed on with all the pleasures to anyone who wants to pick up the needles...

Burnt Salsa = Tax Write Off

Sometimes working at home and cooking at home don't mix well.
Example : I started making a batch of homemade tomatillo salsa today(with garlic and cilantro). I unhusked the tomatillos, put them in a pot of water, and went back to work.
An hour later, I smelled something kinda good...then about 15 min later, heavy into a budget revamping worksheet, I decided to check on my tomatillos....it seemed like just a few minutes had gone by! I couldn't believe how burnt they got so fast!

So I'm calling it a day, and off to Whole Foods to start a fresh batch. Sometimes working at home isn't all the great. Maybe I can write the salsa off my income taxes...???

A Musical !

I went to see "Menopause the Musical" last Friday night. I just can't describe how funny it was, except that it just felt so good to laugh and laugh throughout the entire play! If anyone wants to come see it, I'm game for repeat performances!

Literature, Food and Knitting

I recently got an email from my sister (in law) Bessie, who is reading Isabel Allende's book, The Sum of Our Days....apparently she writes about getting through the toughest part of her life tragedies by cooking and knitting! I am going to the library today to get a copy...Bessie was reading the book the other night and got my email about my blog and thought it was such a coincidence that the book and the blog were harmoniously presented to her!

Isabel's tradegy is losing a daughter, much worse than mine (basically menopause and boredom), but I guess whatever happens in life, picking up the needles or creating a batch of homemade soup can help ease the pain. Here's an excerpt from the book:

And me? I devoted myself to cooking and knitting. I got up at dawn every day, cooked quantities of food, and took some to Nico's house or left some on the roof of Celia's van, so at least they would have something to eat. I knit and knit an enormous, shapeless heavy wool article that according to Willie was a sweater for the house

I wonder if it looks like my 'blanket' or 'sweater for the house' I just can't seem to ever finish this project, and I keep knitting and knitting on it...it's made from all my scraps (and my mom's) over the years. A 'green' blanket!

family reunion

OMG, I woke up this morning and thought about the family reunion we are hosting for Thanksgiving weekend! Yikes, about 20-23 people! I am gathering all my positive-culinary-thoughts together... I told Mike that maybe I could pretend I'm on "Top Chef" and he can time me, as I run to Whole Foods, run home, and have everything prepared by Thursday @ 5:00 pm. The guests could pretend they are my helpers so there is no competition...maybe they are past winners on Top Chef and feel sorry for me....at any rate, I'll be having random bouts of insane moments thinking about this event. By the way, I picked up a Gourmet and Bon Appetite at a local SB sandwich shop that covers the holiday cooking. (Sara says I stole them, but they were in the newspaper recycling bins....I'll give them back after November 29th.) I will get a menu together this week....is it too early to start chopping veggies???

We are NOT inviting Padma and Tom - the judges of TOP CHEF. I hate being eliminated, and I'm sure the rest of the family feels the same way.

Chuckle for the Day

Yesterday, Mike called and said he checked my blog to see what was for dinner!
Ha ! And I had just posted a knitting blurb about making a sweater! Ha! Did her seriously think that my blog would miraculously create a meal every night for dinner??? I'm way too busy for that! The statue here is what I look like when I'm thinking of what to cook...

I think the craft of cooking is like anything else creative, you have to WANT to make it, and make it so that it tastes good, and is satisfying. It may take me days of pondering and shopping to whip up a batch of granola. My next attempt is banana bran muffins - but not for dinner!

By the way, he whipped up another great Philippe pork french-dipped sandwich for me, and again I was in heaven! Added some salad and we were both happy campers.

More later,
Nancy

Guess who?

This is a fellow knitter, who wanted only to show off her hands knitting...
notice the knitted sweater that she also made with her lovely knitting fingers!
Thousands and thousands of stitches, intertwined together, with a beautiful lace edge on the bottom! When my socks are done, (and my bag(s), blanket, hat, and new scarf) I may try to whip up a fall sweater - for 2012.

Meet Philippe!

I got home last night, and Michael surprised me with his own rendition of a Philippe sandwich! Roasted pork on a french roll, au jus (homemade) and some of the famous Philippe mustard. He went to the Dodgers game last Friday and headed to this famous landmark after the game and picked up a jar.

The sandwich was just great, and since I had to fly from Santa Maria to Vegas (damn Allegiant!) I was too tired to think of my culinary skills and whip up a meal. We watched the game and I savored the sandwich.

Interestingly enough, on the Philippe website is a bobble head, I guess this is what the little french guy looked like:

It might make a great Christmas gift for a special sibling (not you Lou)...our family has been visiting this hole-in-wall for four generations!

Roasted Tomato Soup....

The roasted tomato soup turned out just great, and I added some roasted red italian peppers to the mix and blended it all together..yummy! Basil, garlic, homemade chicken stock, ripe red tomatoes from the farmers market, olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper...now we need some good croutons...need to go back to Whole Foods for a fresh baquette. Michelle and I also came up with the idea of fried polenta mini-balls and toss them in the tomato soup....

Just worked on my *@*#*&$(@ sock...who makes socks???? The first sock is a torturous endeavor to finish, and then you have to make another one! It's seems like a lifetime of knitting. If i ever give you a pair of socks, I realllyyy love you! I'm keeping these

BLOG!

This is my newest and most exciting adventure in cyberspace. I'm done with facebook!

My goal is to share my two favorite things in the world - no not kids or dogs or house projects, but truly what makes me happy: Culinary and Fiber Arts.

I'm off to Whole Foods to buy granola fixings...today I'm roasting tomatoes and Italian red peppers to make either soup or sauce (or both)...check back!
